Seventeen Fires EIC on Maternity Leave | People on the Move – 8.24.16
Senior editorial changes at Real Simple, Marie Claire, InStyle, and more...

By Becky Peterson :: August 24, 2016

It’s been a rather interesting week for high-level editors at women’s magazines.

Hearst dismissed Seventeen editor-in-chief Michelle Tan. A Hearst spokesperson did not return a request for comment, but multiple sources close to the situation tell Folio: that Tan was on maternity leave. Tan, who reported to Cosmopolitan editor-in-chief and Seventeen editorial director Joanna Coles, is replaced in the interim by executive editor Joey Bartolomeo.

Real Simple editor-in-chief Kristin van Ogtrop left Time Inc. after 13 years at the brand. Sarah Collins, executive editor, will serve as interim EIC.

Where there aren’t dismissals, there are high profile poaches. After weeks of personnel changes at the brand, Laura Brown is the new editor-in-chief of Time Inc.’s InStyle. Brown left her position as executive director at Hearst’s Harper’s Bazaar to fill the vacancy left by Ariel Foxman's resignation in July.

Lea Goldman has left her position as executive editor at Marie Claire. She is now editorial director at Refinery29.

Jane Keltner de Valle is joining Architectural Digest as style director. Keltner de Valle joins the brand from Glamour, also a Condé Nast publication, where she worked as the fashion news director. Her move comes weeks after Glamour and Self consolidated and laid off a handful of employees.

Here are the rest of this week’s people on the move:

Hearst has named Andrew Amill publisher of EatingWell. Amill, previously VP of media sales for the Weight Watchers Media Group, replaces Deidre Finnegan, now associate publisher for Better Homes and Gardens.

Meredith Corp. has hired Steve Crowe as VP of consumer marketing. Crowe joins Meredith from a position as VP, COO and general manager at Hallmark Data Systems. Prior to that, he was VP of consumer marketing at Time Inc.

Women’s Health has hired two. The Rodale brand named Marnie Braverman associate publisher and Lindsay Nickens national digital sales director for the brand.

Mark Rechtin was named executive editor of TEN: The Enthusiast Network’s Motor Trend. Rechtin joins the company from Consumer Reports, where he worked as a content development team leader for print and digital automotive coverage.

Self named Dania Ortiz fashion director. She had been fashion market and accessories director there.

Wendoh Media has promoted Melinda Sheckells to the newly created role of editor-in-chief, where she will oversee all Wendoh titles. Ben Ward was also promoted to creative director of Vegas Seven, Zoneil Maharaj to director of digital content, and Ian Caramanzana to assistant editor. Mark Adams was hired as arts & entertainment editor and Jessie O’Brien was hired as editor of DTLV.com.
