Magazine designer Luke Hayman has garnered numerous awards for his work dating back to the late nineties. His most recent accomplishment was helping New York launch a completely redesigned version of itself in 2005, just five months after Hayman joined the publication.
Among Hayman’s accomplishments: ASME gave I.D. Magazine, under Hayman’s watch, a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 1999. In 2003 and 2004, the Society of Publication Design awarded Hayman with 17 merit awards for his work at Travel + Leisure. In 1998 and 1999, SPD also awarded Hayman three gold awards for I.D. Magazine, which was also nominated twice under Hayman for Magazine of the Year.
In the world of magazine design, there’s a buzz around Luke Hayman. But the soft-spoken 39-year-old, who, as New York’s design director, is less than willing to take full credit for his accomplishments.
"I’ve got a really good team," says the British-born Hayman of his New York counterparts, including editor-in-chief Adam Moss and photo editor Jody Quon. "Adam is a very visual editor," Hayman says. "He wanted the magazine to look like it did when it was at its high point in the seventies. So we referred to that aesthetic without copying it. We were looking for something that was elegant yet readable." Before joining New York, Hayman spent just over two years as creative director of Travel + Leisure. He also served as creative director of Brill Media Holdings, where he was responsible for the redesign of Brill’s Content, Folio: and Kagan World Media.
Hayman offers this advice to young designers: Find a mentor. "It’s hard to get to that top slot," he says. "But if you work for good people that glow rubs off on you. At one point I actually took a big drop in salary to work with someone I thought would help my career."
